LEONARD WAS SHOPPING AT A PINE HILLS WALMART AND ALLEGEDLY CHASED AFTER ADAMS, WHO WAS SUSPECTED OF STEALING DIAPERS, THEN SHOOTING AND KILLING HIM. IN THE PAST, LEONARD HAD CLAIMED HE FELT THREATENED BY ADAMS AND WAS DEFENDING HIMSELF, BUT SURPRISED EVERYONE IN SEPTEMBER WHEN HE DECIDED TO PLEAD NO CONTEST IN AN AGREEMENT WITH PROSECUTORS. Man accused of fatally shooting Pine Hills shoplifting suspect changes plea

The man accused of fatally shooting a shoplifter in 2017 changed his plea the day he was supposed to be sentenced for the crime.”I’m not guilty of the crime. And I just want to state that fact. I’m not guilty,” Lonnie Leonard said.Leonard is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Arthur Adams at a Pine Hills Walmart.Officials said Leonard chased Adams, who was accused of stealing diapers before the shooting.In the past, Leonard claimed he felt threatened by Adams and was defending himself, but in September, he pleaded no contest to the charges after an agreement with prosecutors.On Monday, he changed his decision.”I don’t understand everything judge, I really don’t,” Leonard told the judge, then said he didn’t understand how many years he was facing.Leonard also complained about his lawyer and said he disrespected Leonard’s daughter.Leonard said he wanted to use the “stand your ground” defense.”I know I’m not guilty, so I’m going, I want to take it to the court,” Leonard said.With the plea deal, Leonard faced a maximum of 10 years behind bars. By withdrawing from the deal, Leonard could get at least 25 years if he’s found guilty on all counts.
