An Oak Hill man who is a husband, father and grandfatherwas paralyzed when he was shot in the neck outside his own home.”My whole life was turned upside down,” Joel Tatro said.Tatro and his wife Lisa said their lives were forever changed when uninvited teens showed up to a party.Tatro said he was an outdoorsman before February of this year and loved being with his wife, their children and grandchildren.Tatro is now a quadriplegic who can only move his head and shoulders after a bullet severed his spinal cord. He is confined to a bed. “It’s been a real struggle for myself and my family and friends. It’s a big pill to swallow,” Tatro said. “He didn’t ask for this injury, he didn’t ask for any of this, none of us did,” Lisa Tatro said. She said teenagers who crashed their family party Feb. 17 turned violent when Joel Tatro told them to leave.James Powell, now 16, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Joel Tatro. Another teen, Sylvano Leslie, is charged as an accessory. “They all say God can’t give you any more than you candle and I’m pretty strong. I am, but lord, this is weighing me down,” Lisa Tatro said. She is the full-time caregiver for her husband. She sleeps in a recliner in her husband’s room at the home of a family friend.The couple have to give up their rental home.Though Joel Tatro gets disability, Lisa Tatro said the family is buried in medical expenses.The couple are desperate for a specialized motorized chair to get him to and from the doctor, even just to get him out of the house once in a while. “It’s like my husband was taken from me and I may never get him back if I can’t get him up and moveable,” Lisa Tatro said. The case against the accused teenagers is still winding through the system and Joel Tatro said Powell should be harshly punished. “He needs to pay for his consequences for what he has done to me,” Joel Tatro said. “My husband hasn’t hugged me in almost nine months. He hasn’t hugged his kids or his grandkids,” Lisa Tatro said.
