Sam Howard in 2017. After several days of state testimony, the defense took less than a half-hour to rest its case Tuesday. It took the jury less than two hours to return the guilty verdict. Miller was captured the same night two years ago, on which the Kissimmee Police Department suffered its greatest one-day loss. Sgt. Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter were ambushed and murdered.Baxter and Howard were shot while checking an area known for drug activity.Baxter, a three-year veteran of the department, died in a hospital that night and Howard, a 10-year-veteran, of the department, died the next day.
