Amelia Court is holding its grand opening at the site where the old Amway Center used to be.It’s been seven years since the old Amway Center came down and cleared space in downtown Orlando for a new vision for the Parramore area, the University of Central Florida and Valencia.Since the demolition, wheels have been in motion to get a new joint campus off the ground and bring about 7,700 students to the downtown area initially, not just with classes but with housing to support them, and their families.Friday’s big step is a ribbon-cutting for the Amelia Court complex.It has 256 units and it will have some affordable housing options, according to the city.Finding affordable housing is a major challenge in Orange County.The Orlando Housing Authority told WESH 2 News it has 12,000 people on its waiting list to find an affordable place to live.As Amelia Court marks its grand opening, there’s still work underway on some other sections of Creative Village.The complex will be opening next year.The project was a partnership between the City of Orlando, Atlantic Housing and Bank of America Community Development Corporation.

Since the demolition, wheels have been in motion to get a new joint campus off the ground and bring about 7,700 students to the downtown area initially, not just with classes but with housing to support them, and their families.
